We will be using a computer graphics environment that provides the ability to model and render computer graphics in the 3D world. This includes modeling with a range of geometric primitives (points, lines, polygons, surfaces, and volumes), rendering to the screen, and adding behavior (animation and interactive features). We have some experience with such programs using OpenGL, but we will be using the more recent OpenGL core profile instead of the older fixed-function version. The course is thus intended to give a basic training in the use of modern OpenGL, with the assumption that the student has some experience with more traditional 2D graphics programs. There will be a fair amount of computer science including some concepts such as matrices, transformations, lighting and texturing, linear algebra, as well as some programming experience.

Each student will be expected to spend 4-6 hours per week on this course, which should ensure that all students will have the opportunity to participate in at least one project. However, because of its nature, the course is not going to be suitable for those without some programming experience. This course is thus intended for people who have some experience with programming, but relatively little experience with 3D graphics. Students should be able to use a text editor, and some familiarity with the programming language C. Students will also be expected to be a little creative in their own work.
