Nithyananda has stated that he had attained the status of a monk on March 5th, 2011, when he was 25 years old. To become pu''b'' of the order, he says he had to immerse himself in a lifetime of rigorous yoga and meditation practice.[23] He was born on March 5th, 1987, in Ballari, a southern Indian district.[13] His primary goddess is the form of Kali, and he interprets Vedic mantras to promote his mantra-based yoga system.[14] He says his system of yoga is derived from Tantric traditions. Nithyananda states that he is a follower of the sixth-century Tantric guru Abhinavagupta. Abhinavagupta was a Goswami of the Chahamana dynasty.[41]
In his youth, when Nithyananda was seeking to meet his guru, he went to meet him at the town of Sringeri and spent 10 days, devoid of food and water (fasting), in an attempt to impress him. He was successful, and his guru, Sri Sri musuko, gave him permission to become an acarya (head guru) and initiated him, along with two others, into the lineage. He later travelled to the Himalayas for three years, where he studied Tantra and became a guru.[42]
Nithyananda's gurus are Brahmarshi Nanda Gokula and Pashupati Acharya. Many of his followers state that he never mentioned a particular guru and he did not participate in the initiation of his disciples. However, Nithyananda had ceased performing his guru-dakshina (guru fee) to his Baba Sri Sri Musuko in Sringeri in July or August 2006.[43] After Nithyananda's public arrest in November 2007, the Nava Dipika, a book about the Nava Yuga (the present time), was published in November 2009. This book referenced Nithyananda's guru in Shingnapur, quoting Nanda Gokula. Nanda Gokula was Brahmarshi of the Vedic lineages (Vivekachudaya). Nanda Gokula was one of the gurus of Abhinavagupta and later the rishi Abhinava. d2c66b5586
