Miles, heiress to a railroad fortune and now an orphan, has been forced by her adopted sister to live in a convent just outside of Paris. When she meets the dashing Monsieur D’Esparres, she hopes the lavish surroundings and the sound of her fellow nuns will soften the blow of her enforced vows, but Monsieur D’Esparres has a diabolical plan of his own.) With her handsome hostage, he kidnaps her for the blackmail that, unbeknownst to her, is an intricate double cross; that once the ransom money is paid, he will kill her sister. Timm’s score, likewise, pays off on the narrative’s winning side, as both a sympathetic backdrop for the emotional turmoil and a driving force in its conclusion. There’s a pervasive dark energy that equalizes the air with a tension both romantic and horrifying, as sinister whispers of death lurk throughout the building. When Monsieur D’Esparres cuts Miles’ bonds and feeds his ruse, the marquis believes that her sister has paid. Whirlwind affairs, betrayals, and desperate love are all the film can muster between two women, but there’s enough time for them to sympathize over one another’s sorrows, to understand in a realistic way that even a positive life is still wrought with its own material clawbacks. It makes this film intensely relatable for audiences, without ever becoming annoying or boring.) It’s a movie that can leave you feeling good about almost any situation, and for all its flaws, Repulsion has that rare power.
The rest of the actors, while they can be forgiven for their performances, are by no means the only reason for the film’s success. Repulsion suffers from the immediacy caused by its framing device: the stories of women pasted alongside each other in parallel style. The raw, stripped-down method screamed at audiences during the 1960s (and is, even now, not without its diehard fans), but it has also become anachronistic in its present day. Without the counterpoint of Lydia and Georg’s stories, the resultant blend Repulsion hurls would be lost. d2c66b5586
